The improvement of Newtech hard armor plate

As we all know, hard armor plates have played an important part in battle for saving soldiers’ lives, since invented. Nowadays, they are used more and more widely and have saved countless lives. Newtech has long dedicated to the improvement of hard armor plates, aiming at reduce its weight as much as possible while improving its protective performance.

1. Improvement of hard armor plate’s structure

Presently, there are mainly 3 types of plates--bulletproof fiber plates, metal plates, and ceramic composite plates.

Bulletproof fiber plates are usually made of PE and Kevlar. They are all light in weight but cannot resist powerful bullets such as AP and API.

Metal plates are made of special bulletproof steel. They are usually effective in stopping relatively less threats, such as pistol balls, but they are also heavy because of the material.

Ceramic composite plates are made of ceramic composites, such as silicon carbide and alumina. This kind of plates have many benefits, including better performance, and lower price. They are usually used for stopping powerful ammunition. At present, such plates are widely used in militaries of many countries.

We mainly produce bulletproof fiber plates and ceramic composite plates, and in recent years, we have made many efforts and research in improving the cost performance of our ceramic composite plates.

The structure of ceramic composite plates made by other companies is shown below.

It is made by connecting some ceramic to the bulletproof fiber base. In this structure, the harder ceramic layer smashes the bullet into smaller pieces, which are then blocked by the bullet-proof fiber layer behind.

Through many experiments and verification, we found that adding a special layer of high hardness material between the ceramic layer and the bulletproof fiber base can greatly improve the plate’s overall strength, which exceeds the total strength of each layer. This is just the application of the design idea and technical features of tank armor.

This new design has greatly improved the protective capability of our plates at the same weight and price, making them more competitive in market.

2. Improvement of bulletproof material

In addition to structural adjustment, we have also made some attempts in the application of new bulletproof materials.

In the early days, we discovered the bullet-proof potential of UHMWPE and have applied it to our products. Although UHMWPE is not as popular as Kevlar in the bullet-proof field, it is much better than aramid in ballistic capability, water resistance and UV resistance with a popular price, so it has been regarded as a perfect substitute for Kevlar. Of course, it also has some drawbacks: poor creep resistance, and easy to deform, which can be showed obvious in some bulletproof helmets and hard armor plates made by other manufacturers. In addition, PE is vulnerable to heat---its protective performance declines dramatically with a temperature over 80 ℃. So, PE plates are not recommended to be used in the Middle East, tropical and other high-temperature areas. Both PE and Kevlar plates are available in Newtech armor, and you can choose the rational ones according to your needs.

We have also carried out a lot of experiments and studies to enhance the creep resistance of PE plates, and have made some adjustments to the structure of PE molecules, which has improved the creep resistance of PE plates as strong as that of Kevlar. Though great improvements have been achieved, we didn’t rest here. We have never stopped trying to improve the cost performance of our plates, and at the same time, we are working on the developing of new ceramic composite materials with higher hardness and tenacity.
